Helen Butler

November 23, 1932 — September 17, 2011

Helen Rast Butler, 78, beloved wife of David R. Butler, passed away just after midnight on September 17 after a long and courageous battle against lung cancer. Born in Kilgore, Texas, she was the daughter of Albert and Marie Scherer Rast, immigrants from Switzerland. After growing up in Kilgore, Helen attended TSCW in Denton for one year, then transferred to the University of Texas at Austin. She was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority and graduated with a degree in Education. She met her future husband, David, at UT and they married December 20, 1953. This was a wonderful, richly rewarding marriage of nearly 58 years. Helen is survived by her husband and two loving children, Brian who lives in California with his wife Beverly, and Sarah who lives in Allen, Texas with her husband Curt Richards. Brian and Sarah each have two children - Heather and Jason and Stephen and Scott, respectively. Helen is also survived by one brother, Edwin Rast, of Longview, Texas. There will be no services aside from a gravesite memorial in Quinlan, Texas for members of the immediate family. Anyone desiring to honor Helen's memory are encouraged to donate to a favorite charity, the American Cancer Society, or the Oncology Department of UT Southwestern in Dallas.
