Evert Schutter Jr., 81, passed away on April 14, 2026, in Gladewater, Texas.
He was born on February 19, 1945, in Wilp, Voorst, Gelderland, the Netherlands, during the final months of World War II under German occupation. According to family accounts and his mother’s journal, he was delivered by his mother, Dina, in a washtub in the yard while she was hanging laundry. He was born into a family marked by courage and faith. During the war, his parents, Evert and Dina Schutter, risked their lives by hiding a young German Jewish couple in their attic for nearly three years. In 1948, the Schutter family immigrated to the United States and began a new life in Texas.
Evert attended school in Terrell, Texas. Before graduation, he chose to serve his country, volunteering for the United States Army during the Vietnam era. He went on to build a life as a general contractor and electrician, and at times a farmer, known for his strong work ethic, practical skill, and steady dependability.
On September 30, 1966, he married Patricia Joyce Moffitt in Kaufman, Texas. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, service, and perseverance. He served as an ordained deacon in several churches and lived his faith quietly, sincerely, and consistently.
Evert was known as a provider, protector, helper, and friend. He offered food, shelter, advice, and friendship to many. He was trusted because he was steady. He was respected because he worked hard. He was loved because he cared deeply for people without seeking recognition.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia Joyce Schutter, whom he deeply missed after her passing in May 2024.
He is survived by his brother Dirk and sister-in-law Patricia Schutter of Emory, Texas; his brother Tony and sister-in-law Betty Gail Schutter of Gladewater, Texas; and his sister Helene Hakim of Rowlett, Texas.
He is also survived by his sons, Eddie Schutter and his wife Sharon of Garland, Texas; William “Billy” Schutter of Gilmer, Texas; and Gary Schutter and his wife Abigail of Gladewater, Texas. He leaves behind several nieces and nephews, sixteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and many friends whose lives were touched by his kindness, strength, and faithful presence.
In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated and laid to rest at the grave of his beloved wife.
A memorial service will be held at Clarksville City Baptist Church, 2213 Old Longview Highway, Gladewater, Texas, on May 16, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with Pastor Roger Guage presiding.
His life was a testimony to faith, endurance, hard work, and quiet service to others.
